Do you wear a hat running those long hot ultras ? Guys like Meltzer prefer to run with out the hot cap on their head as it holds the heat in and creates a lot of extra sweating or does it ? I prefer the hat for the reason you can turn it as you run through different angles of the sun, you can turn it backwards to shad your neck and turn it forward to shad your face as the sun moves through the day (don’t burn the solar panel WHSG). The hat can be helpful during those pounding rain storms as you can pull it down like Hal Koener to keep the rain of your face. Anyways leave your thoughts on Hats for Hundreds.

Not a hat guy either. I want the least amount of junk possible. However they were helpful in college while sleeping in class.

If I didn’t wear a cap the reflection would blind all the other runners. I’ve always thought it helped keep sweat from running down in my eyes. Tried bandanas but I like the top of a bill of cap to put my sunglasses when I take them off.
yes for hat – to cover eyes from the sun and pouring sweat.
and YES for getting married!!!
Holy crow!~ the ol’goat finally tied the nouse! Congratulations! lets all get wasted off of gels in celebration! Better start scheduling those races far in advance now. Anytime the ol man used to make hunting/fishing plans he made sure to get it on the calendar early or otherwise you’re stuck watchin a chick flick that weekend or doing “we should” work which really means “I”.
Elwood the goat is impressed and jealous

Visor; best of both worlds.
Visor…or hat depending on the race.
I like the hat for the long distances and a visor for triathlons. Besides, I can always take it off if it isn’t working out and rock an old school sweat band – do people still wear those?
….Congrats Karl! Enjoy the married life.
I wear a cap all the time — night time too. I find it easier for my sunglasses and/or my headlamp to stay put, not to mention that it keeps the rain/sweat/sun out of my eyes.
Congratulations on the marriage as well. I had the pleasure of meeting Cheryl at Javalina last year as we both waited for our runners — she seems like a wonderful person. Best wishes to you both.
I usually do the hat thing. I hate direct sun (and sweat) in my eyes and since I don’t care for running in sunglasses on anything technical unless the sun is really intense a hat is pretty much neccesary. (I always feel like sunglasses make me clumsy as a runner). As far as a hat for a 100 specifically, well the only 100 i’ve ever done was in Alaska, in February, so yeah, I sure was wearing a hat… or two.
I used to always wear a hat, but my big issue is the heat and my new look is cutoff shirts and no hat to keep cool and so far it does seem better.
Though I will carry a hat with me on my pack in case of rain (I wear glasses).
Congratulations, Karl!
I prefer a bandana just because I think its a lot cooler when soaked with water. Congrats on the marriage WHSG! Another question, is there a runner limit on the WSG 50k?
No limit on the WSG 50k, next year we hope to have 300 runners with prize money! Steve Pero ~ Thanks for the Bighorn pictures, now I know what I am in for. bahahah
Karl and Cheryl,
Congratulations from Scott and Nicole Jaime!
I always wear a hat at any race adn usually when training. Habit I guess, but I do find it helps keep the sweat out of my eyes.
