Speedgoat 50k

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on July 27th, 2008

The Speedgoat 50k ended with comments like  “that’s the hardest thing I have ever done!”  Talk about rugged trail races, the Speedgoat handed out 10,500 feet of climbing in 30 miles with steep descents and never ending climbs. This years winner Nate McDowell smoked the course in 5:43 to set the scrape for next years runners. Nate’s wife Petra won the race last year so now they each have a goat leg trophy, three scrapes !!

The woman’s race was won By Anita Ortiz  who ran steady all day to complete the course in 6:07! Nice shot of Anita at the top of Snowbird’s cirque traverse.

Hardrock 100 - 2008

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on July 15th, 2008

This was the last time I saw Kyle Skaggs who ran in a zone unknown to the rest of us, Kyle completed the course in 23:23 which is unheard off!  During the two weeks I was acclimating in the Saun Jauns I seen Kyle sprinting buy several times looking really fast. I heard this rumor about him breaking 24 hours at Charlie Thorn’s house and was trying to understand how someone could do that?

Hardrock 100

My race was set be a slow start and go slower until I got to the top of Handies Peak which would be just about daylight, my plan was to start pressing the downhills and get to Sherman TANK UP “Roch Horton quote” and push hard the last 30 miles. Well that sounds except I showed up at Grouse Gulch with a stomach that was saying “no more anything”. With out the ability to intake any water or gu I was facing at a disaster! My sweet wife took me into the mash tent where I had the pleasure of hanging with Witt and Paul Sweeny who were both horizontal. I tried to force down a GU and puked it back up next to Paul’s head, sorry Paul.  After sipping coke, broth and eating stale pretzels I felt the body coming back.

I left Grouse aid station eating little bits of pretzels the whole way up Handies with my pacer Joan Parker who did a awesome job getting me over the highest point of the course. Once I got to the top I enjoyed a moment with team mate Marc Cosmas who came from sea level and finished a great run!

Then the switch flipped, I was able to push down gu’s the sun rose and all hell broke lose. I came into Sherman and Tyler Curiel said “he looks to fresh he hasn’t run the whole course.” I sat down super intense and had a coffee and burrito and asked Tyler how long does it take to finish the last 30? He said “about 11 to 12 hours or 10 hours if you are a stud.”  I left Sherman and started digging as deep as I ever had and pushed hard into 92.1 aid and suffered up the last 2500 foot climb with Cory Johnson then sprinted the last giant downhill into Silverton to complete the final leg in 9:38.

I ran with out a watch, here are my estimated splits vs. actual arrival times:

Aid                  Estimated                         Arrival time

KT                    9:30                                  9:29

Well after a long hard search I found a pale ale worthy of the goat tradition, the Scapegoat Pale Ale !! Yes it’s true, the Big Sky Brewing Co. from Missoula, Montana has blessed the over controlled Utah liquor store’s with a killer pale ale.

Next time you are in the west check out the Scapegoat Pale Ale! Three scrapes for Big Sky Brewing Co.!

Take a close look at the map (click to enlarge)! If you make it past the beer carton clockwise on July 12th, you will be a happy goat!

Bighorn 100 weekend

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on June 19th, 2008

The Big Horn weekend is upon us, one of the most beautiful courses I have ever run! Like most high altitude treks they’re all still buried under several feet of snow. The 50 mile turn around point is covered with 3 feet of snow which makes the aid station unreachable, so the course had to be changed! Fellow WS Goats are up there testing their skills on a course that is either muddy  or dried mud full of horse prints that are fairly tricky to run. Good luck Olga and Sandy!

Three scrapes!!

Sproston Takes Women’s Title @Massanutten 100

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on May 26th, 2008

“She won without being pressed. She looked calm and in control all day. Some observers, whom we will not identify since we protect our sources, were convinced that Amy had gone out too fast and would crash and burn. She didn’t. Amy’s time was eighth on the all time women’s finishers list and she is the fifth fastest women in MMT history. (Sue Johnston is responsible for four of the times ahead of Amy’s.) “

Wow, just a re-cap on “Just another goat”

Nalgene and Faux-Nalgene Bottles Will Likely Be Added to List of Toxic Substances in America Lite

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on May 5th, 2008

CamelBak will end up looking like the smartest guys in the room with their non-BPA bottles if the Canadian government tags the Nalgenes as a toxic chemical. Some undercover scientist leaked to the press that the Canadian government is prepared to let the world know that camping and baby bottles are slowly poisoning them. How many years of poisoning have you expreienced?

The public and industry will have 60 days to comment on the designation once it is released, setting into motion a two-year process that could lead to a partial or complete ban on food-related uses of plastics made using B.P.A.

When they say “public” they mean Canada, but I stopped using my Nalgene years ago—to dangerous. Now I just use it as an ashtray.

Wasatch Speed Goats and Hardrock 100

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on April 17th, 2008

The mighty Hardrock gets another WSG Speed Goat (Marc Cosmas) on the runners list! Congratulations!  Marc was just informed he’s off the waiting list in front of heavy hitters like Scott Jurek and kyle Skaggs. What a show down if those two get in! Team mate Steve Pero is going to finish his second Hardrock as for me I am looking for my first finish. The year I ran we went the same direction and bonked after crossing Handies Peak with Stephanie Erhart. Long time friend Todd Salazar was there to witness the carnage. C-ya in July Todd!  Bahahaha!

Steve Pero’s wife Deb paints a finisher print for all the runners each year, she is also running to re-visit Virginia’s pass ( Steve quotes” It’s not only one of the coolest aid stations, but is where Deb and I announced our engagement during the 2001 Hardrock!”) How cool is that!

Recognize these two????  Leave a comment and guess?

Cross Training April 9th, 2008

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on April 11th, 2008

It really needs to stop snowing in Utah, I just ran a 100 miler completely out of shape and I come home to more storms and more snow. The upper body gets a great work out and so does the legs but I need to find some dirt and run. Do you think Hardrock will even happen this year with the Snow pack? Steve Pero, give us the skinny?
