Speedgoat 50k…snow fun!

Here’s a preview for Saturday’s Speedgoat 50k…Karl and I finished marking the course which has been altered due to heavy snow pack.  No worry a new thrill every year…ropes on little cloud,  new types of vertical.  Run well…

Sharpen your hooves for this one!!

Voted “Utah’s Best Race” 2011

Bighorn 100 – 2011 Snow and Mud?

Sounds like Bighorn 100 could be a snowy muddy mess, I heard rumors the course may change due to heavy snow pack and rain. Five feet of snow at mile 18 aid station? I’ve seen so many races canceled and effected by inclement weather it makes you wonder what’s up with mother nature? Anyways time to strap on my LaSportiva Wildcats, action traction all the way! I used my Wildcats last year at the UTMB mud fest and I was able to bomb the muddy downhills with confidence, while  many runners were tip toeing around the mud in their Salomon’s.

Quote from fellow Trail Runner Phil Lowery:

Phillip Lowry I’ve been keeping a spreadsheet of the burgess jct and 9300′ snotels. Today, 46 inches at 7880′, 75 inches at the turnaround. No question the course will be changed.

SCRAPE ON!!!!

Collegiate Peaks Trail Run 1

Off to Buena Vista, Colorado to run a fast 50 miler, 400 runners will line up Colorado’s best Ultra for 2009!

As my season starts out slow due to the heavy snow pack in Utah, I’ll use this race to launch my season which goes off now until October.. Oil Creek 100.  The ascents all look runnable with long fast downhills, sounds like a good race to work on leg speed! Look forward to running with Jodie Chase, Chris Boyack and old team mate Tim Long. How could I forget old friend and long time running colleague Todd Salazar.

Speedgoat 50K Best of Utah 2011

Best Ultra Trail Running

The SpeedGoat 50K
It takes a certain kind of fanatic to run a 50K (just over 31.7 miles). To trail run that distance and do it climbing over 20,000 combined feet, you have to be part goat. The SpeedGoat is a rigorous yearly trail run that covers the expanse of Snowbird Resort. This race is for berserker trail runners who welcome the challenge of ascending the 11,051-foot summit of Mount Baldy, at the 9-mile mark dropping back down to the roughly 8,000-foot starting elevation and then hoofing it back up to 11,000 feet to the summit of Hidden Peak at the 26-mile mark. The 2011 race is July 30, but if you can’t get in shape in time, it’s not too soon to start sharpening your hooves for the 2012 race.

Antelope Island Buffalo Run

Antelope Island Buffalo Run
25K, 50K, 50-mile, 100-mile
March 25-26, 2011

I was running  Antelope Island this weekend and must have seen over 50 trail runners out there training for the big event! Teammate Jim Skaggs has put together one of the biggest events there is with runners from 4 events trekking along side the Buffalo’s…I’m used to seeing them in the daylight but it might be a little scary at night as I plan on running the inaugural 100 miler Jim added to his list of distances.

Stay tuned for race updates>>>

Karl, keep it upright and roll out another great Hardrock, #6 !!

Hardrock LIVE!

Jemez Mountain Trail Runs 2

Jemez 50 miler, time to get serious as Zane Grey was a “off the couch 50 miler” training run. The Jemez 50 is chalk full of savvy veteran trail runners along with Assistant Director for the Wasatch Speed Goat’s Tim Barnes, look for Meltzer trekking with a hunk of cast on his right arm, will it slow him down?

Jemez looks like my type of course with a ton of vertical crossing three 10,000 foot peaks, great training run for the upcoming Bighorn 100 and Ultra -Trail  du Mont Blanc.

Zane Grey 50 Miler – 2010 1

Here we are hanging in Flagstaff waiting to run the mighty  Zane Grey,  after a night on the town with Meltzer and Torrence, it’s time to shake off the Jaguar bomb hangover and get ready to run….Looks like there may be a little snow on the course up high, maybe a little mud to keep it interesting?  Either way this trail is going to be rutty, rocky, overgrown and full of toe stubbing booby traps. looks like a good day for my La Sportiva Wildcats,  stay tuned for more trail running stories from Zane Grey.

Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc – Obligatory Material 8

For a trail runner who’s used to lining up at 100’s with just a Nathan Elite 2V Plus Pack, it’s going to be a  blast carrying all those required items on my trek through the 2010 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. I am not a big fan of a bag of water on my back  which covers a large part of my thermostat, oh well. As I prepare to run the ultimate trail running event, I look forward to enjoying the experience with team mates Jodi Chase and Cory Johnson. The Chimera 100K / 100 Miles – Meltzer goes for #6

Old Goat Trail RacesMeltzer off to the Chimera

100 miler as he tries to post his 6th 100 mile win of the season, sick.. Masters runner Speedgoat Meltzer never seems to slow down. Karl posted 6 – 100 mile wins two years ago and I really didn’t think he would try it again. Meltzer mentioned his hooves are sharp and he’s ready to climb the 24,000 vertical for his 7th 100 of the year and maybe 6th win??. Good luck and 10 scrapes!!

Green Layer “If only your skin were made of this”

You know your an Ultrarunner if….

After 15 years of Ultra running my wife has seen it all, her friends at work have heard it all, so they handed her a hard copy of 110 savoy statements that “You know your and ulltrarunner if”.. I laughed my a** off knowing this applies to all my fellow trail runners. So each week I though I would share a few of these statements written by various authors.
  • You spend more time in the drug section than the food section of the local market.
  • You wonder why they don’t make all running socks a dusty brown color.
  • You have more dirt on your shoes then your garden.
  • You think that flagel and ibutrophin belong on the breakfast table.
  • You get more phone calls at 5AM than at 5PM.
  • You don’t recognize your friend with their clothes on.
  • You have more buckles then belts.
  • You postpone your wedding because it will interfere with your training.
  • You keep mistaking your boss for Norm Klein.
  • 6AM is sleeping in.
  • Your feet look better with out toenails.
  • Your ideal of a fun date is a 30-mile training run.
  • You’re tempted to look for a bush when there’s a long line for the public restroom.
  • You don’t think twice about eating food you’ve picked up off the floor.
  • You can expound on the virtues of eating salt.
  • You develop an unnatural fear of mountain lions.

Pinhoti 100 – 2009

Looks like the southern goats are ready to rumble through the Talladega National Forest for a point to point 100 miler. This is the second annual run for the race and who else but Speedgoat Meltzer is there ready set the standard. Last years win was over 20 hours, I’m sure that will change. Looking forward to watching  team mate Tim Barnes run his first 100, scrape on!

I lost track of how many 100’s Meltzer won so far this year, 5?

Katcina Mosa 105k 3

That’s the distance Suzanne Lewis and I covered during the Katcina Mosa 100k.

What a day in the Utah Mountains with massive vertical and extreme heat, a perfect trainer for the upcoming Wastch 100. The day started at 3am to avoid some of the heat as the field cruised along I hooked up with Ultra runner Suzanne Lewis, we ran near each other all day until mile 45 aid station where the fun began.

The aid station volunteer gave us updated directions which sent us off course to climb a exposed heated rocky 1500 vertical foot climb, the time the four wheelers caught us we were part way to Daniels Summit. Hot, demoralized and a long way from any aid stations we were sad to say the least. Once we were back on course we lost about an hour on the field and Suzanne was well out of first place, so we chugged along staggering around the oven with no water in search of the next aid. Once we reached mile 52 we chugged a ton of fluids and jogged to the finish laughing about the day. Nothing like a good adventure, look for Suzanne to redeem at the Wasatch 100.

Katcina Mosa 100K Mountain Run 1

The Wasatch 100 warn up is less the 5 days away!! A bit of a sleeper but the Katcina Mosa 100k hands out a whopping 17, 404 feet of vertical gain. Wasatch Speed Goat Dave Hunt has owned this race for years as he always pulls off a Cheetah performance at Wasatch the following month. I am looking for this to be my final tune up for Wasatch, 3 scrapes!! This years Speedgoat 50k winner Eric Storeheim will be lining up with for another win!!

Should be a hot steep day on the trails!

Speedgoat 50k – 2009 2

The temperatures heated up so did the competition for first place as Luke Nelson lead early to the top of  Mary Ellen Gulch but was taken over by local runner Eric Storeheim who never looked back (6:12)! What a day at the WILD Bighorn 100 !

Karl Meltzer was attacked by a moose and kicked twice, still managed to brake his own record by an hour! (50 scrapes!) I’ll let Karl tell the story but when I saw Meltzer shortly after he was attacked his eyeballs were popping put of his head !!

All Wasatch Speed Goats finished strong, 4 out of 4 finish. Tom Remekes, Scott Mason, Sandy White and Cory Johnson. 10 scrapes to Sandy White for crushing his first 100 mile finish.

Buffalo Run weekend 3

It’s time for “running of the buffalo’s”, team mate Jim Skaggs throws down a trio of races on Utah’s Antelope Island. This has to be one of the most unique trail races around, it feels like your running on the moon  which is surrounded by the stinky Great Salt Lake. Enjoy the scenery and watch out for the Buffalo’s, there’s no trees to hide behind once your out there.

Pocatello 50 Mile Trail Run 3

A scenic and challenging 50 mile solo or relay (2 or 3 person) race .

A much needed trail race has showed up for the 50 mile distance in Pocatello, Idaho; Jared Campbell and Ryan McDermott have taken trail running a new direction.

“50 Mile Trail Run in its solo and relay format.  This unique format will hopefully be appealing to a broad audience of runners given the various length options.  The relay format will also foster a “team-effort” approach, which will hopefully motivate friends to train together and push themselves to get ready for this event”

In addition the race directors have:

“Also unique to this event is that it will be the first ever “carbon neutral” trail race, made possible by us donating to the “Renewable Energy Campaign” operated by the University of Utah (http://windpower.utah.edu).  We intend to donate enough to cover the commuting done by the runners and volunteers.  In addition, proceeds from the race will be used to make a donation to various local charities/foundations, including the Pocatello Cross Country Ski Foundation for their Junior Team (http://www.pokyxc.org/7155.html).”

Tim Long-Wasatch Speed Goat wins Ghost Town 38.5 6

Wasatch Speed Goat Tim Long had the sharpest hooves of the day holding off Andy Jones-Wilkins by 5 seconds the win the Ghost Town 38.5. This is racing at it’s best as Tim and Andy both crushed the record by 45 minutes but Tim had the turbo hooves to kick it to the line first! 10 scrapes for Tim!

Tim Quoted “Trust me, everyone heard about the Crosslites I wore and my Nathan race vest that allowed me to run through the aid stations like they were snake pits.”

Oil Creek 100 Trail Runs 4

This race takes place October 10-11, 2009, Tom is hosting a 50k, 50 miler and a 100 miler at the Oil Creek State Park which was the site for the worlds first commercial oil well.
