Protein and Amino Acid for endurance athletes

Posted in Industry News, Training Tips on May 6th, 2008

Introduction: A protein is any one of a large number of organic compounds that make up living organisms and are essential to their functioning. First discovered in 1838, proteins are now recognized as predominant ingredients of cells, making up more than 50 percent of the dry weight of animals. The word protein is coined from the Greek proteios, or “primary.”

Protein molecules range from the long, insoluble fibers that make up connective tissue and hair to the compact, soluble globules that can pass through cell membranes and set off metabolic reactions. Humans are made up of an estimated 30,000 different proteins, of which only about 2 percent have been adequately described. Proteins in the diet serve primarily to build and maintain cells, but their chemical breakdown also provides energy, yielding approximately 4 calories per gram, similar to carbohydrates.

Proteins are composed of about 20 different amino acids which in turn, are composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur. In a protein molecule, these acids form peptide bonds between amino and carboxyl (COOH) groups in long strands (polypeptide chains). The numerous combinations, in which the acids line up, and the helical and globular shapes into which the strands coil, help to explain the great diversity of tasks that proteins perform in living matter.

Thanks to Chris Boyack, trail runner for Wasatchspeedgoat.com, has put together race updates for the goats. Here’s the team schedule so we can keep up to date on the teams progress. Three scrapes for Chris!

Wasatch Speed Goat MRT update

Posted in Industry News, WSG Mountain Racing Team update. on April 22nd, 2008

The team WSG has been out there scraping up the trails and posting some killer results!

Amy Sproston - 1st place at the Two Moons 100k, probably one of the toughest 100k’s around. Amy should do well at Massaunutten and the Wasatch 100 this summer. Ten scrapes for the win! She won with a cast on her hoof!

Larry Hall - The runner who never stops racing! Chicago 50k Finished 6th overall in 3:56:44. 2nd through 6th were fairly close, with about 7 minutes separating these five places. Chippewa Moraine 50k there was between 4 and 18 inches of the white stuff to run through. Postholing is so much fun, as well as sliding off the trail into the water. I finished 18th overall in 5:53:35 andwas so glad to be done. Do you race every weekend? Nice job, need some spotted cow ale from Wynn Davis!

Tim Long heads to the Bull Run with his hooves sharpened and breaks the 8 hour barrier on swift 50 mile coarse. 7:49:56 for seventh place!! This was a stacked field with over 300 starters, way to keep the leg speed up Tim! Super performance!

Steve Pero ran the , DRB 50K Trail Run also as known as Don’t Run Don’t-Run-Boston 50K. Steve had a great run, not a PB on the coarse but still nailed down 6th place.Steve Pero , NH 6:45! Nice~

Chris Boyack Heads to the Desert RATS / Spring Desert Ultra to hook up with teammate Sandy White. “Too cool to have a teammate in the same race and be able to offer encouragement and motivation.” How cool is that? Sandy made a great final comeback to finish strong in 10:01 (10th place?). Strong work, man! I finished 10 minutes later with 6 blisters, one missing toenail, 14th place. Way to represent the WSG in the desert!

These are just a few updates with more on the way, this team is out enjoying the trails every weekend! Nice work.

I want to thank every one who applied for the team as I was hoping to get 4 or 5 people together, instead I received up to 60 e-mails about the team. I do have every one’se-mail on file as we hope to expand the team next year! Super Thanks!

Hardrock 100 and Go Pro head cam gear review

Posted in Gear Reviews, Industry News, Shoe Reviews, Speedgoat Updates on March 27th, 2008

Virginia’s pass is one of the coolest aid stations I have ever seen and this year It will be on film! Travis Ott from Gary Fisher Bikes sent me a GoPro head cam that fits on your head just like a head lamp. The headband is well designed so the waterproof TV camera doesn’t bounce when you run!. This will be a blast filming sections of the course and documenting the good and bad times of the Hardrock 100!

GoPro Helmet Hero Video Camera

Three Scrapes for Hardrock! I hope the snow melts!

I would like to thank every one for their interest in the racing team. My original plan was for 2009 but the sponsors are stepping it up and we are on for 2008! This year will be a grass roots program as I plan to expand the team for next year.

We greatly appreciate the sponsors for getting on board as they’ve already committed their budgets for 2008!
I hope to have all the loose ends tied up so the team is in place by the end of March!

At this time we cannot except additional resumes do to the overwhelming response.

Thanks for all!

Coyote Two Moon Ultras

Posted in Industry News, Speedgoat Updates on March 12th, 2008

March 21, Race Director Chris Scott is sending off 150 trail runners into the Los Padres National Forest. The 100 mile course has over 28,000 vertical climbing, sounds like a Wasatch 100 day! I am registered for the race but planned on not attending since my AC shoulder separation in January. But of course with only two weeks training under my belt, Coach Meltzer is ” promoting pain”. Karl asked me today, what do you have to lose? He’s right so I e-mailed Chris Scott and greased him with a couple Spaten Optimators to re align my finish time from 28 - 34 hours. I am probably more nervous to run my slowest 100 then I am when I am in shape! This Ultra has staggered starts so every one will finish with in a four hour window on Sunday, what a strategy!

This will be new for 2009 but may begin as soon as this summer, I am putting together a killer group of runners who are dedicated to the sport of trail running. These runners will not always be the fastest guys and girls around but long time trail runners who have and are dedicating their life to the sport.

The selection criteria is simple, just run six trail races each season ! You do not have to be on the podium every race but a consistent finisher. You must have at least one 100 miler on your six race schedule!

I will post your bio, race schedules and your race reports!

La Sportiva Athlete Spotlight Anna Pichrtova:

Posted in Industry News, Speedgoat Updates on February 14th, 2008

Anna Pichrtova: Training Advice: “What good is advice? I should take my own! I should be working on my weakness, which is speed, but I don’t; I run long, which is already my strength. I should be doing hill repeats, but I don’t; I just like to run in the mountains, and get energy from the sun.”

Why - Love the sport. For me, it’s the mountains, having a quiet mind, like meditation. Connect to the nature. And of course, I love winning! But if I couldn’t race, it wouldn’t be a question, I would keep running.
