Altra Zero Drop: Repetition

20131219-155331.jpgA few weeks ago Altra Zero Drop sent me a pair of their new high cushioned shoe called the repetition, it comes out this coming January. This shoe is mean. It’s made as a road shoe but I’ve found it works great on most any trail. I’ve tried them on some rocky Arizona trails, up American Fork canyon on the ridge trail, and I wear them a lot at my cross country practices. The size fits pretty true. The tread is killer, the deep grid system digs into all surfaces. This shoe has the traditional Altra toe box which is shaped to let your toes spread to put less stress on your joints. The one problem I had with them is the laces. They were super long, so I tried tucking them into the lacing system farther down. I suggested to them to try out a quick lacing system with the slide tightening laces. (Seen on most Hokas now) I highly recommend these shoes. I’ve loved them so far. I’ve only got about 150 miles on them and I can tell they can handle hundreds of more.

La Sportiva Wildcats – Trail Running Shoe Review

Here’s a sweet ride with a ton of cushion and large toe box the Wildcat has become one of my favorite La Sportiva Trail Shoes. I ran my last two 100 milers in the Wildcats, the Wasatch 100 and Oil Creek 100. The shoe it self does weighs a little more then the Fireblades and is a little bulkier but has a killer traction(  FriXion® X-Axis rubber outsole ) system that gives you a lot of confidence to bomb the technical muddy downhills. The wildcat is a higher profile shoe but surprisingly I never role my ankle in the toughest terrain, no blisters with the Wildcats…by La Sportiva

Lake Erie Endurance Swim Record – Shattered 4

Long time college friend Randall Mcelwain set his sights on a endurance swim across Lake Erie, he trained all summer and was determined to take down the record of 11:53 from Long Point to Freeport Beach, Pa. Randy sent me an e-mail asking for some endurance nutrition ideals, I mentioned the EFS Liquid Shot by First Endurance, this will keep your electrolytes in line and deliver even energy througout the swim.

I am the new Long Point, OT to Freeport Beach , PA record holder with a time of 11:23. The record was broken by exactly 30 minutes with the former holder there to witness. The swim was great except for the 2-4 foot waives the entire crossing.

Hey, the First Endurance EFS Liquid Shot was great.  I took it on the hour and my strength was did not waiver the entire swim.  Not a single cramp in my Arms and Shoulders.

Thanks for the advice!

Ultragen by First Endurance

This is the one product that has changed my race seasons by leaps and bounds!!

Robert Kunz, MS

The hard training we do on the bike is only the stress that we impose, and is only half of the training equation. To get the most out of that hard training, we need to recover and let our body adapt and come back even stronger. Ultragen recovery drink by First Endurance can be a critical component of your recovery plan.

The Importance of Recovery
When I was younger, my ideal weekend consisted of pounding out hours and hours on the bike each morning and then trying to do the same the next day. I rather enjoyed that feeling of utter exhaustion in between and at the start of following rides, and looked at it as a sign of good training. It was only a few years and degrees later that I put the training-recovery spiral together and realized the importance of proper recovery, both physical and dietary, as an important component of overall training.

Think of a rubber band analogy. If you want to have the hardest snap of the band (training), you also need to pull the band back (recovery) as much as you can. One does not exist in a vacuum without the other.

Dietary Recovery
You have probably heard of the following two terms bandied about before, but let’s define two of the most important concepts in dietary recovery:

First Endurance teams up with trail running 2

The Wasatch Speed Goat Mountain Racing Team powered by First Endurance!

Karl Meltzer introduced me to First Endurance three years ago and I haven’t stop improving since then. With the heavy demands we put on our body it’s tough to keep up with nutrition. Lance Armstrong’s Astana Cycling Team is also powered by First Endurance products….Scrape on!!

Wasatch Speed Goat Trail Team testimonial: Chris Boyack

“Just wanted to drop a quick note and say thank you for sponsoring our Wasatch Speed Goat running team.  I am a firm believer in your products and put MultiV, OptygenHP, Liquid Shot, and Ultragen to the test over the past two months leading up to the Moab Red Hot 50K+ race last weekend.  Karl turned me on to Ultragen last year, and I have been taking the vitamins and Optygen every day for the past 2-3 months.  LS was my fuel of choice for the race.  I had a great day in Moab and give a lot of credit to First Endurance.  I couldn’t believe how easily I was beating my targeted splits, and with such a moderate heart rate (for me).  Truly a fantastic feeling.  Yes, I trained a lot as well – but I feel that the FE products really made a difference in how my body was able to absorb the training I was doing.

I surpassed my goal by a long shot, and didn’t have to kill myself to do it.  A great confidence boost and I now know I can start pushing even harder.  Keep up the good work, and thanks again. “

Carbohydrates for Endurance – First Endurance 1

Intro: Energy for endurance exercise is fueled primarily by fats and carbohydrates, with carbohydrate utilization increasing as the intensity of the exercise increases. Thus, carbohydrates are crucial to competitive endurance exercise performance. In addition to food based carbohydrates, there are many different energy supplements marketed for sport, which are available in a variety of forms. These carbohydrate supplements are available as a result of demand based upon experimental and research based evidence, but understanding when your body needs carbohydrate in which amount depends on three key areas: capacity, conversion and type.

First Endurance recovery drink-Ultragen

Recovery Drink Comparison Chart – This is one training supplement that will help your body keep up with it’s demands.

Athletes train with the purpose of improving performance. Training sessions are designed to stress the body beyond its baseline homeostatic condition. The specific adaptations that occur because of training depend on the type of training, the intensity of training, the individual and the pre/during and post workout nutrition. [See Energy and Electrolyte Drink Comparison for nutritional considerations during training.} Work is done during training, and almost every system in the body is involved with that work. Aside from the obvious muscular, circulatory, and respiratory systems, the nervous system, skeletal system, integumentary system, and digestive systems are all hard at work during training. Calories are consumed, heat is generated, fluids and electrolytes are lost, free-radical oxidative stress is generated, and tissues are broken down. All of these systems need to be restored before the next training session. If training continues without adequate recovery, then overtraining results and the athlete’s performance begins to decline. The length of time it takes to recover properly can be minimized if the appropriate nutritional building blocks are consumed immediately following a training session (within 30 minutes has been supported as the optimal timeframe by the literature). Nutritional deficiencies may even prevent recovery from ever happening, and thereby an optimal performance is never attained. read more >>

Ultrarunning and coaching Heber Storm Soccer ?

What’s this?

This is my daughter’s soccer team who just won the whole league for Division One U-13 Soccer. What’s cool were from a little town called Heber City just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The teams we compete against have hundred’s of kids trying out for the squad, we had 25.

Nothing like coaching along side of Ian Harvey, accomplished Olympian Skate Skier (Toko Rep for North America) who understands what it takes to be the best.

I’ve help coach these girls for the past three years, it was very rewarding to see the “bad news bears” win  the division and become a Premier Soccer Team !

October 6th, final game to win the league !!

The Heber Storm, scrape on!!

La Sportiva Fireblade vs. Hardrock 100

After running in the Montrail Vitesse for over ten years I finally switched shoes. My first season in the La Sportiva Fireblades went extremely well. The first part of the year I ran the Two Moons 100 and the Squaw Peak 50; The Fireblades preformed real well but the big test was still waiting, the rugged Hardrock 100.

Trail shop

During the Hardrock I trekked through dozens of streams, glaciers and scree fields that were nothing but rocks. The Fireblade was sturdy enough to handle the rugged terrain but yet a really light fast feeling shoe. The sole carried enough lugs to stick through all types of surfaces like the snow fields, mud and wet rocks. I like the skinny heel which makes for a confident heel strike down those tricky, rocky descents.  The Fireblade doesn’t have a bunch of extra bulk and weight which feels real sleek on the feet!

Another design feature that works real well, is the pointed sturdy toe box. Other shoes designs have the bigger flatter toe box that doesn’t deflect toe bang near as well as the pointed toe box. In fact I didn’t get one single blister or lose any toe nails, the first time ever in 60 plus ultra marathons.

Three scrapes for the La Sportiva Fireblades!!

Gear Review Black Diamond Ion Headlamp

The Black Diamond Ion showed up in the swag bags at the Twomoons 100. This is a unique race because of the staggered starts based on your estimated finish time. I hit the trails 9:00 at night for the first full moon and was able to run with the Ion all night. After sun rise I left the headlamp on my wrist (1.3 oz.) and used it as a back up light for the second night. The 6v battery throws out a nice beam for up to 15 hours of trail running!

Hardrock 100 and Go Pro head cam gear review 3

Virginia’s pass is one of the coolest aid stations I have ever seen and this year It will be on film! Travis Ott from Gary Fisher Bikes sent me a GoPro head cam that fits on your head just like a head lamp. The headband is well designed so the waterproof TV camera doesn’t bounce when you run!. This will be a blast filming sections of the course and documenting the good and bad times of the Hardrock 100!

Three Scrapes for Hardrock! I hope the snow melts!

Trail Gear Review – First Endurance 1

First Endurance keeps us all moving race after race with the help of Ultragen, the ultimate recover product. Not only do they make a killer recovery product we highly recommend the Multi Vitamin V90 specifically designed for the endurance athlete. These two products alone help us run race after race after race all season long, ask Karl Meltzer who won (5) 100 milers already this season, “keeps you fresh as a daisy!” If you want some serious extra boost for carrying oxyegyn to the muscles, take a look at the optygen, this has been a popular supplement for the Tour De France guys as well!

Trail Gear Review – Black Diamond head lamps 8

This one two combo can help you navigate through a blizzard at night ! Yea, thats what the Bear 100 handed out this year, full cloud cover and dark conditions. When the sun first set, I used the Spot to start the long night run which last 12 hours in late September. I went with the 3 LED setting all night long, when it got super dark and snowy I started up the Icon, this center LED sent a super defined spot in front of me while the Spot Headlamp lighted up the general area. Even during the 12 hour night leg I never had to change batteries, try that in a blizzard after 20 hours of running, not!
Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

The two light combo allowed me to run all night with no pacers in the snow and clouds, I couldn’t see the pink ribbons and there where very few glow sticks, but I just followed Meltzers foot prints all night long! Thanks for leaving those scrape marks ! Wahsatchspeedgoat.

How to pace at a 100 miler 8

    Notes from the goats

There is no exact science to pacing but here are some the tips we have learned. It all started a long time ago when old friend Dan O’Connor paced to my first 100 mile finish, the Wasatch 100. He was motivating, pushed the pace and keep me moving, as I’ve had other pacers who were just happy to walk and talk with me. Here are some keys points to think about:

    • Know your runners abilities
    • Motivate your runner at all times
    • Be aware of your runners goals, keep track of his splits and remind him frequently what pace they are on.
    • Monitor their water and food intake, be sure they are ahead of their needs.
    • Pay attention to their pit stop plan before you enter each aid station.
    • Most important the aid station is a pit stop, not a rest stop along the highway. Your runner must race down time as well, this will translate to a faster finish.
    • Run in front of your runner, stay ahead and keep them running if they can.
    • Evaluate their strengths such as can they run better downhill, uphill or the flats, once you determine this push your runner through those sections.
    • Most of all, as long as your runner is not injured, get them to the finish!

If you fellow goats have any good info, leave a comment, Bahaha two scrapes!

    Trail Gear Review – Petzl e+LITE 7

This is the best little headlamp I have ever used! The Petzl e+LITE weighs less then one ounce and has a battery life up to 45 hours. The LED works real well for any race that starts in the dark, you can clip the light to the rim of your hat and leave it on until night time returns, you won’t even know it is there. I would not rely on this light for the full night leg of a race but I would leave it on your hat or in your pack for a back up light. The e+LITE has a red LED that blinks up to 45 hours if you need rescued in the backcountry, great feature for safety! I will be starting the Bear 100 with this lite in two weeks!

    Optygen ~ First Endurance

    Maximize Optygen Use:

Optygen is unlike any other endurance product available. Optygen is a legal, safe and stimulant-free formula designed specifically to optimize performance for endurance athletes. This revolutionary formula is based on human clinical trials and the latest scientific research on increasing endurance. The two main adaptogens in Optygen were first used by Tibetan Sherpas to help them climb Mount Everest. Optygen utilizes these unique adaptogens because clinical research (on elite endurance athletes) has shown them to increase oxygen utilization, increase the body’s ability to adapt to high levels of physical stress, increase anaerobic threshold and reduce lactic acid. Used by the Wasatchspeedgoats along with Ultragen by First Endurance.

    Ultragen and Multi-V for recovery…

After completing the grueling HURT 100..only K, I was thrilled to discover that I was recovered completely only 9 days later, I have been consuming Ultragen from First Endurance after every run, also taking the Multi-V vitamin daily. The recovery process is incredible and one can feel the body rebuild itself every day. Although it was not my best run, it was certainly a good test of my fitness level in January and my recovery status after running 5 100’s in 11 weeks last fall. Ultrarunning is evolving, and products keep improving, First Endurance will make you faster and healthier without doing anything but consuming. Isn’t that what ultrarunnning is, consuming and not breaking down?

Three scrapes for Ultragen and Multi-V. Baaaaahhhhh!
