How about Andrew Skurka for performance of the year:

It wasn’t a race, and he wasn’t running, but he averaged more than 50K a day.

Great news on your AT attempt, Karl. Look forward to you heading through New York state. Maybe I can tempt you off the trails for beers in NYC. We’ll get you right back out there.

Tony Krupicka also won last July’s Leadville High Mountain Institute 50 in 4:33:47 .. it’s a pretty tough course, tops out above 11k feet and is run on some of the Leadville 100 trail … their website is at http://hminet.org/page.php, the results are down on the bottom left of the page ….

Grossman finished 3rd in Promise Land 50K…

    Karl,

I screwed up on an earlier post about a small correction needed on Kyle & Erik’s 2007 results. They did tie at the San Juan Solstice 50, but they did not tie at the Jemez Mtn. run. At Jemez, Kyle won the 50 mi., and Erik won the 50k.

While it may not fit your criteria in terms of speed to me the most remarkable performance of the year was Sarah Lowell being the only finisher in the foot division of the Arowhead 135 in temps 30 below. I don’t think anyone else even covered half the miles. It was amazing reading her story in Ultrarunning and the challenge of completing the event in a complete self-supported fashion (handling basic human needs in that weather was monumental).

I do agree and have thought that Sarah Lowell’s performance was fantastic. I remember those few weeks kindly and I wasn’t part of the race, but it was colder than billy blue blazes!

Although not much press covered the unbelievable performance of Matt Estes at the Hurt 100 in January, I was there and was blown away by his speed as he lapped me like I was standing still. My vote goes to Matt. That said, this list of performances is truly amazing, way to go everyone!

WHAT ABOUT GOGGINS HE DID LIKE 9 100 MILE RACES. Three in like 20 days, and he broke the ultracentic 48hour record with over 200 miles.

    Mt. Mitchell 40 2nd
    Ice Age 50 1st
    Rattlesnake 50km 2nd
    Tussey 50 1st
    JFK 50 4th
    Salem Frosty 50km 2nd

    What…..Huh????? Brennen says,

“Karl, Great news on your AT attempt”. What’s up with that?

    Goat going long?????

    What a list!
But for what kind of runner are we looking for:
The best US Ultrarunner or the best US Mountain Ultrarunner?

These are quit some different pair of shoes.

Easy Bev! Now that we have all your races of course you are on the list and certainly a top contender. This is the simple reason the voting polls are not out yet. We need a little help getting all results together. And we thank you for that! One thing we don’t require is a $20 chump fee, and believe me, the trophy is one of a kind! USATF trophy is stock issue.
The SOTY is the the best runner whether it’s a road race or mountain race, this is what makes it so difficult, we like that too. Hopefully when we start the real vote we’ll have it all compiled.
Yes, Karl will be attempting to break Andrew Thompson’s AT record this year starting in August heading North to South, All tracked with wireless so everyone can watch me suffer! It begins after I try and break the masters record at Western, then the Utah Ultrarunning Camp, then the Speedgoat 50K. Andrew’s record is phenomenal and is in no way going to be easy, probably harder than I think.
We’ll add Goggins to the list.
Billy, just ran from Delaware Water Gap to Wind Gap, brought back memories. Baaaahhhh Speedgoat50k.com. Karlmeltzer.com

So Karl, inquiring minds want to know - how did you get into Western in the end? That must have been some interesting wheeling and dealing…

yeah, Jim Orr really did crank out a good year. Definitely gets honors in the age department/performances

  • By Kelly, January 14, 2008 @ 9:47 pm

How about Jack Pilla? He set a Masters CR at Finger Lakes 50M finishing 2nd overall, 3rd at VT100, 1st and CR at Stone Cat 50.
