Notes from the Goats
Jurek has his hands full at Spartathlon!
Can Scott repeat? Was it a good idea to bail at 42 miles at Mt. Blanc? We’ll find out soon as Valmir Nunez, Jens Lukas, Markus Thalman (all previous winners) to the line in Greece for the ultimate pavement pounder of 255KM. The list is super -deep and of course us goats don’t know all the mystery men. A long line-up of Korean and Japanese runners are also sure to be in the running. Also from the US, 24 hour record holder Mark Godale will show up as well as Jenn Shelton to push the women’s side, we’ll stay tuned for this one.
Nate McDowell wins in Moab and breaks Mr. Torrence’s record by 33 minutes!
Nate is back on track putting another solid performance down in Moab at his specialty distance of 50 tough miles. Not surprise to me, The Moab course is probably one of the most scenic courses on earth, it might be better to run it slower and enjoy it…yah right!
Bear 100 starts Friday!
One more 100 miler for me and I’m done for a while. Speedgoat will go for a 4th 100 mile win of 2007 in Leland Barker’s backyard, the Bear River Range. The colors are stellar this year as always. The field, larger than ever before should make it a great day in Idaho. Tune into bear100.com to check it out.

Valmir is on fire right now, probably recovered well and saving himself for an encore performance from Badwater. Truly a pavement pounder.
The Japanese are coming on large and strong! They dominated the 100km road Worlds.
Just spoke with buddy Mark Lundblad. He and his wife both notched wins at the Tussey 50mile road championships. Anne notching her 8th and Mark his first. Well earned. A dog fight between Grossman and Schmitt. Schmitt falling back at 42, and Grossman dropping back on a climb at 47. Mark put the hammer down for the last 4. Guy has wheels, we battled at Ice Age this year back and forth. He loves the 50mile

jenn’s not running spartathlon…she moved out to Bend, OR this summer, so look for her to (hopefully) start getting some respect in the ultra scene now that she’s close to some real trails…

I was asked to attend at Tussey, glad I didn’t have to deal with those speedsters, had it been trail, I might have showed up. Sounds like a great race…The Spotted Cow will be consumed on Saturday! Looking forward to that! -Caoi

I think one must set up residence in Seattle or Oregon to be a legit “trail runner”, at least that is sometimes the vibe. You know what Rodney Dangerfield would say…
Midwest gets overlooked, if they only knew of the sick, twisted and gnarly trail here in the midwest. Freeze yer nutz off in the arrowhead 135m, one aid station, or come out alive at the finish line at Lutsen in the Superior Sawtooth. No smooth trail or road on this sick puppy. 20,000ft of relentless carnage.
And the summer, throw in the insane humidity at the gnarly Voyageur, Afton, Pyscho trail runs.
But i guess we all like to root for our home turf in some respect

Tony,
I was at RR100 last Feb. It was a pleasure to watch you and Jenn. Great athletes both of you, and a lot of class. I stopped to congratulate you, maybe about 1am, hours after you finished, and that must have been Jenn sitting next you but no one said anything and I had no idea, so a belated “nice run” to Jenn.
Karl,
Did I see you turned 40? Doesn’t mean a thing, but welcome to the masters division.

Good luck at Bear!
Baaaaa!

Not 40 yet, I still get to run in the OPEN Division. I will always be 39. December 8th is the date. ……and 6:03 is flying, way too much speedwork! -Karl

I enter the master’s division exactly two months ahead of ya. I’ll toast ya!

Scott,
sorry…i don’t remember you. thanks, though; i look forward to going back to Rocky this year. look for jenn to do some damage at the seattle North Face 50 race coming up–she just ran a 35 min 10K this past weekend. I would be happy with that kind of 10k time!
September 26th, 2007 at 6:24 am
I think my last 35 minute 10K was about 20 years ago…that’s scary! -karl

I’ve got an 11th grade high-school athlete running 16 min cross-country 5Ks going to pace me a short section of a 100M I have coming up. I don’t use pacers really but I’m justifying this one as trail/ultra recruiting for the future.

Jenn’s been running real trails back East; trails that are generally a great deal more difficult than the ones in Oregon and other places West. The respect bias has nothing to do with proximity to “real trails” and everything to do with simply living and running “out West.” Anyone who has run MMT would likely agree with me on the point of real trails.

Scott’s in 3rd and 20 minutes or so back from the lead at 93K.
