Mt. Blanc and Leadville 100
Time to focus on the next challenge, Meltzer and Jurek go head to head again at Tour de Mount Blanc in Chamonix on August 24, 2007. Being a North Face event maybe we will see how Dean the machine will do against the Jureks and Meltzers of the Ultra world? Meltzer and Jurek are going to battle it out on the treadmill Uphill Challenge at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City 8/10/07 as I go up against the speedy Tom Borschel (oh no!). The following week I head to the “Run Across the Sky” the Leadville 100 for some high altitude entertainment, hoping to do a PB on the leadville course.

Hey goodluck to all. I’m heading to Pike’s Peak on the Leadville weekend for my 6th running of the Marathon. The 50-54 female age group record is a possibility if the stars align.

I wish you guys luck in your upcoming races and I’ll see you at the OR show where I will surely be humbled by 15 minutes of treadmill torture next to, yikes, Dave Mackey. Also, be sure not to overlook Hal Koerner at Mont Blanc. The last time he was overlooked he kicked some serious butt!

Good luck at Leadville. I’ll be there too!! Did my last long run yesterday in fact. Nice overcast day, a little sun, with a few sprinkles of rain. Would be nice to have the same on race day.
By the way, my “Last Place Award” from the 50K has become quite the conversation piece in my office. Usually something like “what the hell is that?”

Hi Karl,
I’ll be at Mont Blanc also, it’s going to be quite the adventure. Have you put any thought into using trekking poles? I know most euro’s use them but I decided not to use them I hope I’m not making a mistake. Any suggestions on what type of last longish run to do this weekend, lots of elevation gain OR mostly flat? Thanks for the feed back and I’ll be rooting for the Seedgoat. Bahhh!

Yo George, wont be using sticks in France, Its a Euro thing. I may bring some over to sell to them and pay for my plane ticket. Always remember, never use something new in an Ultra until you have tried it out several times first!
It never hurts to do big vertical. Mt Blanc is all vertical and steep. Stay off the flat………….always.

Hey Karl,
Me and a friend are gonna be coming into town thursday night for the OR show (i’m going up against James Bonnett on the treadmill at 2:30 on friday); anyways, you got any beta on the best free camping spots in the SLC area?
August 9th, 2007 at 8:32 am
you guys are welcome to camp in my backyard. not the swankiest site but it’s close to the show.

Hello Tony, Free is a tough one in Salt Lake simply because everything is a watershed and regulated, however, there are lots of campgrounds in the mountains up Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon. They are all Forest Service ones and will cost you 12-15 bucks most likely. That’s really about it. Anything free is at least a 1 hour drive or more and not worth the price of gas. The closest to the OR show would be up Little Cottonwood Canyon towards Snowbird and Alta..called Tanners Flat. The next one is Albion basin Campground at the top of the road. Although it’s an extra 15 minutes, you are in a Mt. Runners Paradise and you would love running up there before the show. Good luck, Karl

Thanks Karl. We ended up parking in the Park n Ride at the bottom of the road and sleeping in the trees down by the creek…coincidentally, this morning we drove up to Alta and I did 3 hours up to Catherine Pass-Sunset Peak down to Brighton and then back up and over plus some extra stuff on the Great Western Trail. I realize now that the Wasatchs are awesome mountains! See ya at the show…
