JUREK takes HARDROCK with a vengeance !

TO NO SURPRISE, JUREK TAKES HARDROCK WITH A VENGEANCE!

After 4 long weeks of acclimatizing and training in Silverton, Co., Jurek takes the goat off the ridge, and breaks the record running 26:08!  Krissy Moehl also with two weeks of acclimatization, puts in her bid for Ultra performance of the year…so far, running 29:24!  The wahsatchspeedgoat remains  “unchicked”, running the fastest split from Chapman home after a 2 hour nappy-pooh, slipping under 29 hours.  The summer has just begun, with the Tour Du Mont Blanc in less than 6 weeks.  Here we will find one of the most level of playing fields, and we won’t be playing soccer!   10 scrapes for Scott, it was a stellar performance!     -Wahsatchspeedgoat

  3. Bob Gentile Says:

It was Stellar Efforts … that was an “ADULTS ONLY” event, all kids out of the pool :-) to push that HARD & FAST for that LONG on that terrain is sickly amazing! Great JOB!!

  4. Markus Says:

Yeah, it was a great race.

Thanks again for all the advise for a ultratrailrun rookie.
My two falls with bike gloves didn’t hurt at all.

Now I have to work on my downhill pace. I was the turtle in this race :-)
    Good recovery to everybody.

Awesome job to karl, and to Scott and Krissy, and to all who are Hardrockers!!! Couldn’t peel off my computer screen:) We’ve seen Scott nap at Wasatch and now Karl here - what gave? Did it help? Apparently, as Karl ran so fast last section. My, I am so occupied with idea to get into HR and…hope not to die:)

Way to hang in and finish strong, Karl. Your large fan base respects you even more. (We slower runners notice a tendency for the elite to sometimes drop when things go suboptimally.) Keep up your great year, good luck in Europe!

  7. Karl Says:

My philosophy on dropping is simple. There is not an option unless an injury prevents me from running. This time it was not an injury, just a little case of hypothermia. It came on quick and the whole hour I spent shivering under 7 blankets I had plenty of time to think of my next move…and that was to run the fastest split home from Chapman. Sometimes the most satisfying performance isn’t the fastest! Thanks for everyone’s support! It feels great to know people are watching. Chamonix will be different! -Wahsatchspeedgoat

    Baaaahhh

Good Luck at Mont Blanc.. GET THE LEAD OUT!

  9. Geoff Roes Says:

Great run Karl. hypothermia huh? was it raining or just that cold? it’s crazy how it can come on so quick like that. that’s pretty impressive to go through hypothermia and then get up and go… and go really damn fast. good luck in Chamonix.

Props to Utahn Jared Campell for 4th place overall! Has long excelled in climbing & Kayaking and now at 28 years old it looks like technical ultrarunning is becoming his forte.

  11. Peter Lubbers Says:

Congratulations on hanging in there and on the super strong finish, Karl! It was great to stay up-to-date by reading the blurbs on your blog and watching the splits and time spent at the aid station on the webcast. When I checked the webcast early that morning, I wondered if you had gotten lost or something.

Any practical tips on avoiding hypothermia?

  12. Brennen Says:

You can’t win them all, Karl (just most of them!). The battle you and Jurek waged through most of the race was giant, despite the pea-sized window most of us watched it through on our computers, following those splits. Let WSER be the grandaddy. With the competition at HR, you guys elevated this race to a new level.

Bring on Mont Blanc, where the playing field will be even (or equally mountainous) for you, Jurek, and Matt.

But no rest, of course, as it’s now to RDing for you and Scott….

When I got to Chapman, I was sweaty and clammy coming down from Oscars Pass, I was fine then, but after sitting for only 30 seconds I was shivering so hard it took me an hour to get the shakes out…it was wierd. Most likely it was just a freak thing and timing. Eating more food might have been good too, so my body had something to burn. When climbing out of Telluride, I was yawning the entire way and could not shake it off…usually I can shake that, but not this time, that is where Scott really pulled away and won the race, although catching him at that point is always tough. When you lead and run scared, like Scott was, it’s amazing how hard it is to be caught. -Wahsatchspeedgoat

bra……hate we didn’t get to hang out much in silverton. you ran a great run my friend and pushed jurek the whole way. the only thing more sore on scott than his ankle is his neck from looking over his shoulder for you. proud of you both. speedgoat lives………….stay in touch…back to the AT with trail dog in 2 weeks. get him back at the blanc!

    peace to ya……..billy

    Baaahhhh!!!

Three scrapes to Mr. Jurek, who certainly has earned honorary goat status.

Those of us at Putnam Basin (mile 95) had to open the aid station two hours early to accomodate his blistering pace. Little did we know that our awe would only be elevated later by Krissy Moehl’s elegant arrival. I swear, she glided in and out of the station via its rocky trails.

Of course, for us inhabitants of the goat den, the highlight was an appearance by the goat king. We knew everything was right with the world when our gentle baying was reciprocated by a strong “baaahh” by the goat king.

Strong work, Karl and good luck in round two on a new continent.

  16. Karl Says:

Right On Sean, thanks! We’ll get him back! BAaaahhhh

  17. AK Says:

Great job Karl! Will be looking forward to your performance at Mont-Blanc.

  18. the ghost of tom joad Says:

    Karl,
If you had been better rested as if you hadn’t done other 100 milers early this year, the story would have been different!!!

  19. Mike Mason Says:

Good luck at Mont Blanc Karl……………..I will be a long way behind you….
