Hardrock 100 ~ SpeedGoat odds are in!

6 Previous winners will toe the line with Mr. Jurek!
The Hardrock 100 is set up to be the most competitive ever!

The Speedgoat Odds are in:
1. 4-1 Scott Jurek (Been acclimating for 4 weeks, the best at preparing for a big run when needed)
2. 5-1 Wahsatchspeedgoat (Tired from previous 3 -100 mile wins, but blue chip stock to run at least 28 hours)
3. 7-1 Mark Hartell (Previous best in this direction…28:52 with a horrible bonk at 90 miles)
 opps Ty Draney 10-1
4. 10-1 Paul Sweeney (always a strong finisher at Hardrock, lots of experience)
5. 14-1 Ricky Denesik (has to have lots of revenge after not getting in the race the last 2 years)
6. 14-1 Jeff Browning (Been preparing and ready to get Meltzer back for breaking his record at Bighorn)
7. 18-1 Kevin Schilling (just sneaky fast, has lots of credentials noone knows about)

Sentimental Favorite…Billy Simpson (just completed the AT and ready to rip Hardrock)

Womens Race
1. 3-1 Betsy Kalmeyer (all time winner at Hardrock and has the experience and focus to win again)
2. 4-1 Krissy Moehl (Has better speed than Betsy but experience should prevail)
3. 6-1 Betsy Nye (Her consistency is unmatched and is blue chip stock for a 32 hour or less finish)
4. 7-1 Emily Baer (Local favorite and better acclimated than everyone, her turn to bust one)
5. 20-1 Diane Van Deren (Always a solid finisher but lacks a little speed to keep up with her competitors)

Scrape a pick, bahahah!

“You know, why aren’t the best marathoners in this country getting a lot of press coverage in Runner’s World? For me to feel bad that I’m not getting that coverage, I have to look at all the other distance runners and not just ultramarathoners. A lot of guys like Karl Meltzer or Howard Nippert on the roads—there are some phenomenal ultramarathoners who aren’t getting even as much press as I am. Am I better than them? That’s the thing that I look at.”

    - Scott Jurek

I guess we’ll find out the answer to that last question. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Good luck. Baaaaah!

I would like to know why the best college runners in this country are not getting press in Runner’s World or anywhere else.

  6. olga Says:

Oh, so nail biting!!! This year it’s going to be as interesting as WS100 to watch the development!

  7. Karl Says:

My opinion on why the best College runners dont get press: It’s all about Media, like Ultrarunning. If the soft general public would get off the couch and throw out that bucket of fried chicken and exercise, they would watch individual sports and realize how strong these college runners and Ultrarunners are. Runners World and most mainstream magazines are all about marketing to the soft, not the hard athlete like ourselves. Shame on them! Wahsatchspeedgoat

  8. Jeff Says:

What about Ty Draney? I think he has a good chance for a top 5 finish.

  9. Dave C Says:

Road running is boring! Should be a good weekend.

  10. wynn davis Says:

Yep it’s all about the over payed, over sexed and over exposed athletes. I’ll be running by a few in a couple weeks as the KC Chiefs make their training camp here in the summer.
O yeah and speaking of fried chicken. I simply shake my head in disbelief during the school year while observing what many students eat every day for lunch… lordy B child!!!!! be hard pressed to find someone that could run a block with out hacking up a lung or dropping ass over tea kettle due to triple bypass.

  11. Scott E Says:

If you happen to meet Arkansas runner Steve McBee at HR… he had surgery for a brain tumor in the past year — and he was accepted from the wait list a couple weeks ago. How tough is that? Hope he has a good race.

Good running to Karl and everyone else. The San Juans are wild, you guys amaze me.

Dave C is right, road is boring. There’s no adventure in running the same 10Ks year after year. I have no idea what they’re thinking..

  12. Bob Gentile Says:

Well I want Krissy to Win for the ladies and on the men’s side would be pretty amazing if Jurek wins HR and then Badwater 2 weeks later…just my humble opinion.

But if I had to lay my money down…It would be on Wahsatchspeedgoat.

    GEL Early & Often :-)

    Give it Your Very BEST

  13. Markus Says:

My bet goes to Betsy Kalmeyer and Karl.
    Experience counts :-)
But it will be a tough race, maybe a new course record?

  14. Karl Says:

I will say I did not mention Ty Draney, I am just a bonehead with a running problem. I didnt give Ty any odds because I am supposed to give him a ride down to Silverton Wednesday, I plan on leaving without him! Ty gets 10-1! No scrapes for me–Wahsatchspeedgoat

  15. WSG Says:

I am going for Krissy and Karl~k&k go for the win!!

  17. Geoff Roes Says:

    Go get ‘em, karl.

Runner’s World is to anyone tough enough to finish Hardrock as Velvetta is to cheese.

Hey Karl, I just read a little blurb on James Bonnett in Men’s Fitness Mag, He said he doesn’t use GELS for trainings cuz he doesn’t want his body to get to use to the boost…now I know U take more GELS then most peeps but this kinda makes sense…. How do you use ur GELS for trainings? or do you use other energy sources and then knock the GELS out during race time…

I know u are getting in race mode now but maybe you can do a post about nutrition tips in the future…that’s one area I am focusing more on now. ahhh so much to learn–lol

Have an awesome race this weekend!!

  20. Caballo Blanco Says:

    Andale Venado [Stag–Deer]….
I bet all my corn, beans and best goats on El Venado de la Sierra Madre.

  21. Caballo Blanco Says:

btw: El Venado de la sierra madre is Scott J. Our Raramuri friends are rooting for him.

  22. John Says:

I wish all the runners the best day of their running lives this coming weekend. I hope Karl kicks it and I hope Kevin Schilling gets the props he deserves. If someone could market the comeback story of Danelle Ballengee properly the public would soak it up and ultra trail running community would get a buzz off of it.

  23. Karl Says:

AS far as James Bonnett’s reasoning on Gels. It sounds good, but that also sounds like if I dont drink coffee for a while, I’ll get a better boost from the caffiene? Or like drinking beers, if I dont ever drink, I’ll get more drunk? I like to train on gels all the time because it keeps me used to them. and they are a tasty breakfast while running. You would have to get a scientist to give the details on how the body processes the gels and if James Bonnett actually has a good point. We’ll post something soon on it, give us some time to research that one. -Wahsatchspeedgoat
