Meltzer sets course record at Bighorn 100

“A GENETIC MUTANT” is the latest quote from another fast Ultrarunner. How does it all come together every month? Who knows. The Competition was tough with Mike Wolfe hanging tough through 66 miles. It was a see-saw race up until then. Aid station time was the difference keeping the Wahsatch Speedgoat in the race. It all broke up when the 2400′ climb after Footbridge came into play. The lead opened to 20 minutes, then it was running scared to the finish…what a stressful sport! For those who haven’t run Bighorn, it is now time, the course rocks! The other Wasatchspeedgoat slips in there for the mug, way to go Mason! 10 scrapes for a successful weekend! Baaaahhhh

  1. Fantastic effort. Congratulations!
Can I ask you what brand/type of running shorts you use, Karl?
I can never find a pair with enough pockets etc. that would be good for a 100 mile race.

    Take care,
    Pete

  2. Way to keep it rolling Goat!!! you know how to stave off the competition even though it’s never easy. Tiger has gotta be just stewing, 2 majors in a row this year and both bridesmaid. I YI YI!

looking forward to doing this run in the near future. Great job once again

  3. Goatboy Mason, way to keep the head down and the horns forward! impressive. Put some of the finest beer in that mug and relish the fine finish.

  4. Hello Peter, are you ready for this. My brand of shorts is the womens REI shorts..I dont know the exact name and I may get some grief for this because they are womens but they work. The way they fit are a little tighter than mens. This way the gels that I carry in my pockets dont bouce around. They are perfect. I am able to carry up to 24 gels without issues. I ate around 60 during the Bighorn run. Good luck, Wahsatchspeedgoat

  5. Thanks a lot, Karl!
Are you sure that is sanctioned by the USATF? [jk]

Interestingly enough, I was trying out different shorts at REI just this weekend and ended up buying a pair of North Face running shorts with side and back pockets. They are very comfortable, but, as you pointed out, lacked the possibility of storing enough gels etc. I was thinking of adding a few more gel-pockets to them myself, but maybe I’ll go back to check out the women’s department :)

  6. so many shorts out there that suck!!!!

Karl is right, another good pair of shorts that I use that has lots O pockets are the Exioficco brand. I think that is pronounced right. I think you’ll dig these as well. I’m able to put a lot of gels in 4-5 pockets, which is much better than having stuff hanging from the waste if at all possible.

  7. Congratulations, fellers. Get some rest before the next one. I imagine, though, Karl, you’re already getting close to a taper for Tour du Mont-Blanc….

    Brennen

  8. Taper? what’s that mean? First we have to conquer Hardrock, I think the only taper I’ll do before is my beer consumption, I’ll have to taper it to wine! Recovering nicely from Bighorn, thanks for the congrats! Wahsatchpeedgoat

  9. Karl, what a day! Another push beyond, glad for you to run away so far last 50k, and despite the worst course conditions still break the CR! That says a lot! It was fun. Everybody rocked! or was it Bighorn that rocked?

  10. Karl,

I’m marveling over the quantity of gels you can carry and eat. I guess I need to step up the consumption. Do you also eat that many gels (3/hour) on training runs?

    Ryan

  11. Congrats again, Karl!

And thanks for the shorts advice.

Since last night I also think I will wear bike gloves at Hardrock.
After a nice nightrun after the Wailers Concert in Vail, I tripped spectacular
on the last 2 minutes down to the parking lot :-)

  12. Always train with lots of gels and usually on an empty stomach, it really makes a difference when racing. My body is accustomed to gel. Always 3 per hour. Wahsatchspeedgoat

  13. rumor is ur GEL Sponsor may be filing bankruptcy ever since you came on, is that true? :-)

OK just Kidding…LOL you are throwing down some serious GELS, but umm it’s soo working so GEL On!!

Hey Karl, I am a newbie to Ultra’s being trained by Lisa Smith Batchen just wanted to stop by say Hello and a BIG Congrats on your WINS & records… you kicking ass!!! Keep Rockin!!

    Best Wishes at Hardrock!!

I too did Bighorn and the water and mud just trashed my feet. They looked like prunes.

Did you have any foot issues and if not are there any suggestions you care to share?

Great job in setting the course record though I do want your DNA checked. ;)

Congratulations on MMT and Bighorn and … My most memorable ‘picture’ of Bighorn was at the awards ceremony when the RD mentioned your ‘championship’ award plate had exploded in the oven and your priceless expression. You probably dont have much room in your house for any more awards. Keep up your energy and enthusiasm for running – its contagious.

  16. Hi Karl compliments for yours winning races! I have bought a montrail vitesse and i amvery happy, thanke you for conseil.
    I have a question,team t shirt is also avalaible? I can buy.
Good running from Italian trail runner and snowshoer.

  17. Way to Rock Gentlemen!
One more down on the way to Ultra immortality. Hardrock will be great watching you smack around Jerker and the rest of the field.
Will be very interesting to see how you fair agains the Euros in Mt. Blanc. Either way, enjoy the European experience and fantastic beer. Even thier bad beer is better than ours.

Enjoying NZ but missing our runs. Feel free to ‘taper’ with me when I get back in mid July.
    Love to the newlyweds,
    Larry

  19. Karl:

I heard in a recent interview that you train 50-60 miles a week. Can you describe a typical one of those weeks? Running versus beer consumption. And also a week leading up to a 100?

    Peace
