Promise Land 50k

JONATHAN BASHAM WINS PROMISE LAND 50K! Basham edges out JFK winner Pete Breckinridge by a margin of only 31 seconds to win in Virginia. That’s only 1 second per mile, folks. I dont think we see too many road marathons that close. Eric Grossman rounded out the top three 12 minutes back. Grossman has been on a tear and was due to lose. He will likely win his next 10 races. Annette Bednosky took the womens race in 5:36 and won by only 13 minutes in front of Tracy Schrage, Jennifer Belt took 3rd in 5:54. Those Dave Horton Miles really pack a great race every time. Grossman was still recovering from an injury he suffered at Way Too Cool, which caused him to pull out of Miwok this upcoming weekend, as well as the Montrail Ultra Cup. What does he do instead? He holds back a bit and still comes in third at PL. Not that he would have necessarily won: As he mentioned post-race, the Killer Bs put in two of the fastest times ever on the course.

And for good reason. The weather was perfect. Too perfect. Heading down from NYC, I was hoping for some heat to get ready for Massanutten in a couple weeks (I remain entirely suspicious of last year’s fanastic conditions, and I tend to believe them the exception and not the norm). I had a good race, and I suspect it was the first and last time I finish top 20 at a Horton event.

By the way, PL must be one of the best races dollar for dollar out there. For 70 bucks, I got entry, dinner for my friend and I Friday night, camping, breakfast, lunch, a T-shirt, and Patagonia Ultra shorts (retail at $45). I’ve commented elsewhere that I think my wife and I just should go ahead and move to PL, as the standard of living obviously beats the hell out of NYC.
