Each spring I bushwhack through the high sage meadows in search of

the mighty elk horns. Today was my day, as I stumbled over a 5 x 5 rack from the winter shed. Cruising into the front yard with a new decoration for the cabin. Bahaha two scrapes!

Karl Meltzer, here at Edinburg Gap, finally adds MMT to his impressive record of tough 100 mile finishes.

Third try is a charm, Meltzer wins with a time of 20:11:09. Karl can now ad Massanutten to his impressive list of 18 100 mile victories, as most of us ad a 100 mile finishes to our list, he ads wins. Karl was chased all day by Todd Walker who finished second with a impressive run by Keith Knipiling for third. Karl was not pushed enough to set a course record, but again he is like blue chip stock at the 100 mile distance. Congratulation to all the runners who were able to finish the rockiest course in the states. Way to go Gary Knipiling for finishing his 10th MMT! Bahaha two scrapes !

We knew it was unseasonably hot this year at Zane Grey, is this what we are in for this summer? There are fires in Georgia, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, California and Arizona. This is only mid May and the wild fire season is already out of control. I went running through the Uinta Mountains behind my house and crossed the swamps that are already dry, hang on Utah the wild fire season is going to be tough. Climate change? Global warning, Global burning? There are surfers filming themselves surfing the giant waves up north after the Glaciers break off! Leave your thoughts on Global Burning!

MASSANUTTEN 100 THIS WEEKEND HAS 160 STRONG! The question is, are there any unknowns? Without Jae Duk Sim this year, we don’t think there are any sleepers out there. Unfortunately, Matt Estes will not be running leaving Sean Andrish and Todd Walker to challenge the Wasatch Speedgoat. Will the third time be a charm?, We’ll see. Speedgoats tend to do well on rocky terrain, levitating hoofs and bike gloves for confidence will hopefully prevail. And bring on the hot,sticky heat! Nice hot weather would be wonderful! As the season rolls on it is good to have products like Ultragen around! The chance to recover and rebuild with Ultragen keeps your season moving at a record breaking pace. BLISTER MANAGEMENT THE OLD FASHIONED WAY. For those out there having issues running after a race because of that nagging blister on your heel, try this. Head to the tool shed, grab your drill and a 1″ spade bit, mount shoe on a vice and drill away right where the blister is. (go to photo). Remember when moleskin was the answer?, not any more, the shoe is the moleskin. This pair of vitesse are still new but still perform perfectly with maximum support. This is Juneau and her brother Timber, these two pups weigh more than any cougar. The team of Malamute/Timberwolves are great to have with you when running through the mountains of Utah, knowing you passed at least one cougar while running. After a couple seasons of trail running, these pups are always checking me for my running belt when I leave the house, once they see the water bottles, the howling begins. Dogs are the one training partner that will never bail on you for a run! Man best friend !! Wasatchspeedgoat

The Capitol Peak 50 mile, 55K, and Relay results are now posted on the website: The weather was finally nice to everyone out there, especially those who returned from suffering in last year’s snow madness, and the previous year with the “thorny carwash”! All I can say is… it’s about time! Hopefully the weather is this nice this same time next year!! There were record breaking performances on all levels, which I posted I a new link on the website. Van Phan broke her own course record by 51 minutes, with a time of 8:58. And Jim Kerby, after winning Mt Si 50, 6 days previous, also came and claimed the Capitol Peak crown and broke the course record with a time of 7:31. The 55Km also saw outstanding performances with Allison Hanks setting a new course record of 6:12, and John Berta setting a new course, beating the entire field by almost an hour, with a time of 4:58. John Berta was also the “First to the Peak”, which was the first to summit Capitol Peak at about mile 22 and then finished. We also would like to recognize our 1st seniors who were Max Welker in the 50 mile and Kent Holder in the 55Km. The 2-person relay “Team Slow Boy” which included Benjamin Chafflin and Tom Maciukena, proved their name wrong, by running just shy of the relay course record in a time of 7:13. And as far as I know, all Capitol Peak repeaters PR’ed by a long shot! Congratulations to everyone who finished or gave it their best to attempt in this year’s Capitol Peak Ultras!

JONATHAN BASHAM WINS PROMISE LAND 50K! Basham edges out JFK winner Pete Breckinridge by a margin of only 31 seconds to win in Virginia. That’s only 1 second per mile, folks. I dont think we see too many road marathons that close. Eric Grossman rounded out the top three 12 minutes back. Grossman has been on a tear and was due to lose. He will likely win his next 10 races. Annette Bednosky took the womens race in 5:36 and won by only 13 minutes in front of Tracy Schrage, Jennifer Belt took 3rd in 5:54. Those Dave Horton Miles really pack a great race every time.
