SpeedGoat Senior at the young age of 70

Posted in Speedgoat Updates on April 6th, 2007

Happy Birthday to my Dad who turned 70 years young! I didn’t start running until I was 33 which I thought was late , he started at 65, wow! Right after retirement my Dad suffered a life threatening deal at 63 which he fought off with his inner strength and desire to live. During his recovery he trained with vengeance and started lifting weights and running like Forest Gump. Two years later he was visiting me from back east and we went for a trail run, sure enough he was fit as could be. He was running up Park City Resort like he owned it , I was thrilled about his incredible recovery and thanks to my sweet Mother !!

The next day I was at the Park City Trail Marathon registration to visit some friends, the race wasn’t sold out and I asked myself, my Dad can do this if he let’s me pace him. I went ahead and signed us both up and informed him that day to get ready for the run of a life time. He looked at me unsure but full of confidence in my decision, remember he never ran more then a few miles before this. Race morning he was calm and ready to run and shed his final layer of questions, why did I get struck down right after retirement? We started the race and he followed my advice on pace, hydration and nutrition as we toughed our way through the 26 mile course. We crossed the finish line and it turns out he won his age group and finished just in front of Helen Klein and her husband. My whole family was in tears, it was more of a thrill the when I finished my first Wasatch 100, I knew then the man was back! As Helen’s husband was puzzled how a guy from sea level who never ran a marathon was able to beat him and finish first place in his age group.

Clarence Mason now has won more 10k’s in the Erie Pa. area than any one his age ever. He is now 70 with 10k winning times that are faster then all the age groups 50 and above ! Hat’s off to my Dad, Lance A. would be proud ! Running with Erie’s Running Club

Endurance Athlete from another era

Monne Davis was using IV bags from hospital’s to carry her water during 100 mile horse races, this lady was ahead of her time! Here we are all set with hydration systems, electrolyte tablets, recovery products and all the modern convinces to assist us in endurance racing. Moone spent a lot of time managing her horse toljaso, her needs came second. She would feed her horse electrolyte tablets and spend a lot of time watching the horse’s energy and nutrition levels, as we do ourselves in our 100 miler races. She logged over a 1000 miles of Trail Racing in 1999. Moone also was a world class sled dog racer, she would manage and train a pack of up to 60 dogs at a time. When we race all we have to do is worry about ourselves, not a horse or a team of dogs. Moone didn’t stop there, she is a marathon runner, mountain biker and a skier. Co-worker Moone is the toughest lady I know, she is always teaching me new endurance stuff at work every day !

WasatchSpeedGoat racing tip

Runners spend way to much time digging through their drop bags at aid stations. You should be able to run a 50k without any drop bags as long as there is aid stations with the basic fluids and snacks. On a 50 miler you should only need one drop bag with some xtra gu or a food, as long as there are aid stations with the basics. These days it’s like having 7-11’s all the way thought he race, it is easy to get caught up in the drop bag frenzy ! Take a look at what you really used after a race a streamline that whole process. I was running with Charlie Vincent at the Moab’s Red Hot 50k and he nailed it ” I can’t keep up with these younger runners until the the aid stations and then I pass them.” It takes time to figure out your specific needs during an Ultra, but you will find out you need less then you think! Remember next race to run against down time, that will translate to a faster ultra.

Trophy Maker Wynn Davis breaking the sound barrier

Posted in Race Updates on April 2nd, 2007

Fellow Ultra runner Wynn Davis will be a force to reckon with, he raced last Saturday and ripped a 3:25 50k on the Chicago Lake front. Sounds like he needs to step it up and run the Wasatchspeedgoat 50k with those fresh legs! one scrape!

Meltzer/Mason running with biking gloves

Posted in Training Tips on April 1st, 2007

I was taught from day two to wear bike gloves in the rugged Wasatch Range, Meltzer clued me in after my first endo down Grandier Peak. I was racing Karl down a steep pitch when I caught a toe and launched 10 feet through the air only to plunge to the ground hand first. After trail rash on both hands I went out and bought a pair of $10 biking gloves that completely protected my hands during future endo’s. Another benefit is you can stick a pack of gu in the top of each glove when you load up for a big run or race. Once you get used to the gloves protection, you can’t run technical terrain with out them. Ask Paul from Montrail, we did a super technical night run up Little Cottonwood Canyon to the Pfeiferhorn, when we returned Paul had a flapper on the palm of his hand, ouch!
